2016 Hyundai Sonata Camshaft Position Sensor Guide
The camshaft position sensor is a crucial component in your 2016 Hyundai Sonata's engine management system. It helps the engine control module determine the position of the camshaft, which is essential for proper ignition timing and fuel injection. Sensor Location
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata is equipped with two camshaft position sensors:
1. Intake Camshaft Position Sensor: Located on the front of the engine, just below the valve cover, almost even with the right side of the intake manifold.
2. Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor: Positioned on the back of the cylinder head, in a similar location to the intake sensor but on the opposite side.
Both sensors are typically mounted with a single 10mm bolt and have an electrical connector attached to them.
Accessing the Sensors
To access the camshaft position sensors:
1. Open the hood and locate the plastic engine cover.
2. Remove the engine cover by pulling it straight up, as it's held in place by rubber grommets.
3. Once removed, you'll have a clear view of the engine bay and can easily spot the sensors.
Replacement Procedure
If you need to replace a camshaft position sensor:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.
2. Locate the appropriate sensor (intake or exhaust).
3. Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling it straight out.
4. Remove the 10mm bolt securing the sensor to the engine.
5. Carefully pull the sensor straight out of its mounting hole.
6. Install the new sensor, ensuring it's fully seated.
7. Replace and tighten the mounting bolt to 8 foot-pounds of torque.
8. Reconnect the electrical connector, making sure it clicks into place.
9. Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the battery.
Important Considerations
- Always use an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) sensor or a high-quality equivalent to ensure proper functionality.
- Be careful not to damage the sensor's O-ring seal during removal or installation.
- If replacing due to a check engine light, clear the codes after installation and test drive the vehicle to ensure the issue is resolved.

- Check for loose connections or damaged wiring before replacing the sensor.
