HEI Distributor Cap: Locating Number 1 Position
On an HEI (High Energy Ignition) distributor cap, the number 1 position is typically located at the front driver's side tower. This position is crucial for proper engine timing and spark plug wire routing.
Identifying the Number 1 Position
To find the number 1 position on your HEI distributor cap:
1. Locate the two posts side-by-side on the forward side of the distributor cap.
2. The driver's side post of these two is the number 1 position.
3. The passenger side forward post is typically the number 8 position.
It's important to note that the distributor should be installed with the coil cover relatively square to the engine for this orientation to be correct.
Verifying the Number 1 Position
If you're unsure about the number 1 position, you can verify it by:
- Bringing the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke of the number 1 cylinder.
- Checking where the rotor is pointing when the engine is at TDC.
- The terminal that aligns with the rotor at this point should be the number 1 position.
Importance of Correct Positioning
Proper identification of the number 1 position is crucial for:
- Setting the correct firing order
- Ensuring optimal engine performance
- Preventing misfires and potential engine damage
Firing Order
Once you've identified the number 1 position, you can proceed to connect the remaining spark plug wires in the correct firing order. For a typical Chevy V8, the firing order is 18436572, moving clockwise around the distributor cap.
Remember, while the engine will run if the wires are connected to different positions, as long as the firing order is maintained, having the correct number 1 position makes troubleshooting and maintenance much easier in the future.
