2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 CPS Location Guide
The camshaft position sensor (CPS) in a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.6L engine is a crucial component for proper engine timing and performance. Knowing its location is essential for diagnosis and replacement.
Sensor Location
The camshaft position sensor on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L is located at the top-rear of the passenger's side valve cover. To find it:
1. Remove the engine cover
2. Look directly below the transmission dipstick
3. You may need to move some wires for a better view
Accessing the Sensor
To access the camshaft position sensor:
- Remove the engine cover by pulling up on the front to release the ball-pins and pulling forward to release the rear hooks
- Clean the sensor body and surrounding area
- Locate the sensor behind the passenger side valve cover
Sensor Replacement
When replacing the camshaft position sensor:
1. Disconnect the electrical plug
2. Loosen the T30 Torx screw
3. Pull the sensor straight out, without turning it
4. Note the keyed shape of the new sensor
5. Push the new sensor straight in
6. Tighten the T30 Torx screw
7. Reconnect the electrical plug
Important Considerations
- Always work on a cold engine for safety
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting
- Use the correct replacement part: Mopar part 5149141AF for the 3.6L Pentastar engine
- After replacement, allow the vehicle to sit overnight with the battery disconnected
- Upon reconnection, let the engine idle for 15 minutes to allow the PCM to perform a crank/cam re-learn
Diagnostic Information
If you're replacing the sensor due to a check engine light:
- The common code for camshaft position sensor issues is P0340
- This code indicates a problem with Bank 1, Sensor 1 (passenger side, exhaust cam)
- If the code persists after replacement, further diagnosis may be needed
Remember, proper installation is crucial for the sensor to function correctly and prevent engine performance issues.
